Dry eye treatments

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is one of the most common eye conditions worldwide and a primary reason for a visit to an eye doctor. In a review published in the Journal of Global Health, researchers reported that the prevalence of dry eye is as high as 50% in different populations across the world.

Some dry eye symptoms include, but not limited to:

  • burning
  • itching
  • aching sensations
  • fatigued eyes
  • sore eyes
  • red eyes
  • blurred vision
  • foreign body sensation (the feeling that there is something in your eye)
  • watery eyes
As strange as it sounds, watery eyes is a symptom of DES. This is because dryness on the ocular surface will over-stimulate tears as a protective mechanism. But this “reflex tearing” does not stay on the eye long enough to correct the underlying condition.

Certain health conditions- such as diabetes, thyroid disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren’s syndrome- contribute and cause DES. So, having chronic dry eye, may be your bodies way of letting you know that there is something else going on.
