Dry eye treatments
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is one of the most common eye conditions worldwide and a primary reason for a visit to an eye doctor. In a review published in the Journal of Global Health, researchers reported that the prevalence of dry eye is as high as 50% in different populations across the world.
Some dry eye symptoms include, but not limited to: burning, itching, aching sensations, fatigued eyes, sore eyes, red eyes, blurred vision, foreign body sensation (the feeling that there is something in your eye), and watery eyes. As strange as it sounds, watery eyes is a symptom of DES. This is because dryness on the ocular surface will over-stimulate tears as a protective mechanism. But this “reflex tearing” does not stay on the eye long enough to correct the underlying condition.
Certain health conditions- such as diabetes, thyroid disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren’s syndrome- contribute and cause DES. So, having chronic dry eye, may be your bodies way of letting you know that there is something else going on.
